I am a petrologist and volcanologist working on igneous systems, quantitative petrology, volcanic hazard assessment, and the application of machine-learning methods to Earth science. I obtained my PhD in 2006. After several years in academia, which I greatly enjoyed, family circumstances led me to step away from academic work in 2009 to care for my three young daughters, then aged 1, 1, and 3. During this period, I gained professional experience in e-marketing, web development, and e-commerce, where I was exposed to the early broad adoption of machine learning in these fields. When I returned to academia in 2014, this experience helped me shape a research line focused on applying machine learning to high-dimensional petrological and geochemical datasets. Since 2002 (with a pause from 2009 to 2014), I have also developed and managed a LA-ICP-MS laboratory that supports research in tephrochronology, magma dynamics, and crustal evolution. I devote significant effort to teaching and training through university courses, international short courses, and two books on Python and machine learning for Earth scientists. Over the past decade, I have published more than 100 articles in leading international scientific journals, as well as two books, and over the last five years, I have secured approximately €6 million in competitive research funding from European and local sources. I conceived and proudly coordinate the MSCA REALISE Doctoral Network and REALI3SE Staff exchange projects, two major collaborative initiatives in igneous petrology. These projects are designed to connect igneous petrologists and volcanologists with data scientists and leading machine learning experts worldwide to address timely and challenging scientific problems related to hazard assessment, risk mitigation, and the emplacement of fertile critical raw material deposits. I have also been invited to speak at international conferences and leading academic institutions on topics such as Machine Learning in petrology and volcanology. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, looking after my dog, and reading about the philosophy of science.
Over the past few years, I have secured approximately € 6 M in funding. I am always eager to build new connections that broaden my skills and enrich my perspective. I strongly believe that collaboration is essential to advancing research and generating new knowledge.
